WELCOME TO THE SECOND SEMESTER! |
|
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome the to second semester!
This is going to be a very short semester for our students of the graduating class. Please take note of the following exam schedule:
Mid-term exam – April 15, Friday
Final exam - May 27, Friday
Books. The books that will be used in the second semester are:
3. For grammar and writing - The Grammar & Writing Book 5 This book is the same book as the first semester.
4. For math – Maths 6B Workbook and Maths 6B Student Book for reference
Notebooks and Materials. Please note that the following notebooks should have been kept as instructed at the end of the previous semester: art, science, math and vocabulary notebooks. A notebook that is already full can be replaced with a new one. Students should let the teacher know if any of their notebooks is missing.
New notebooks are issued for: English Notes, Reading Journal, Creative Writing and one that is especially devoted to our activities on Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH.
Students should keep their art materials at school. Special materials for art and science activities will be announced ahead of time as needed.
Our Lessons: Our focus for the next few weeks will be on preparing our students for the junior high entrance examinations in different schools. The first exam is on March 6, Sunday, the day after the Parents Day.
6Yellow Reading Program.
Our students have greatly improved in their decoding and reading fluency. Reading comprehension is also on the rise. I would like to continue to ask for your support in enforcing the habit of reading at home. It is indeed sometimes difficult to make some of our children read, especially when there are more fun things to do! However, it’s important that they develop this habit at a young age even if it means spending more time checking on their readings. The new reading program guidelines will be posted shortly on our blog. For the meantime, our students should be targetting a total of at least 1,000 minutes of reading time from week 1 until Week 8 on April 10.
Homework. Most of our students have been really great at completing homework on time. As a result, these students have shown a big leap in their grammar, writing and reading skills.
In the past 3 semesters, I have tried many ways to instill responsibility towards academic work. Now that our students are on the last semester in elementary, I would like to “loosen the leash,” so to speak, when it comes to homework submission. This semester, the teacher will not force the students to complete homework that’s not done. The reason being that I would like our children to become responsible for their choices (of doing and not doing their homework) and face the consequences (good grades, failing grades, zero in case of non-completion) of their actions or choices. I hope that lessons learned from this experience will be carried over to their middle school years and beyond.
The following consequences will apply: homework that is not given in the morning will be given a 0%, unless it is completed within the day in which a 50% mark will be automatically assigned. Homework done at school is often rushed and did not serve the very purpose for which the homework was given, that is, to spend some quiet time to learn, understand or practice the lesson. So it’s really better that homework is done after school or at home. As usual, I will communicate through the communication book any problem. If you have any concern that you wish to discuss with me, feel free to come to school or call our bilingual office.
Thank you all for your support and cooperation these past semesters. Once more, I look forward to a productive and open collaboration with you to help your children to be successful in their learning.
Best regards,
Mrs. Lolit Chen

Dear Parents,
1. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP ON THE COUNTY SINGING COMPETITION YESTERDAY!
A million thank you for coming to support our class on the County Singing Competition yesterday! The make up and dress up preparations were done on time. The collective efforts of everyone made it possible for the whole event to proceed smoothly.
Our students performed really well on the stage. Win or lose, they have gained so much from this activity. It was a very educational and memorable experience that they'll bring with them when they leave Yu Tsai.
2. CHRISTMAS PARTY
The next thing our class is preparing for is their last Christmas party in elementary. As such, we want them to enjoy the festivity of the season by sharing food and exchanging gifts. Our Christmas party is in the afternoon of Christmas day on Friday, December 25.
Please let us know what food/drink your child can bring by Monday. The actual food contribution may be brought on the following days:
*non-perishable (does not need to be refrigerated and will not spoil) - any day from Monday to Friday morning.
** perishable (will spoil or need refrigeration) - bring by morning of December 25, Friday
3. FINAL EXAM ON DECEMBER 30 -
Our class is also preparing and reviewing for the final exam that will take place on December 30, Wednesday. The coverage of the test is in the weekly lesson schedule page.

Congratulations are in order to our talented golden boys and girls of 6 Yellow for winning the Regional Singing Competition! Our class was the first out of the 5 chosen best performances. Wooot - woot!
And of course, rehearsals are again going to occupy much of our time. The best of the bests are competing for the New Taipei City Area, the last leg of this contest. It's going to be on December 19, Saturday. We are going for the gold!
Another new thing that's happening this week is the start of our reading on Kensuke's Kingdom. This is on top of the readings we're doing on Greek/Roman Mythology. As you can see, we're pulling out all the stops on reading for our students to gain significant progress on comprehension and critical thinking skills. By the way, students should always bring their independent reading books to school. I still have to test each student randomly on reading comprehension.
Parents, please make sure your child is really reading, and not just skimming or scanning the pages. Our students should read with clear understanding of the material. This week, we'll be recognizing and awarding those who did a great job on surpassing (or meeting) the required reading time on the first reading program.
Have a great 14th week everyone!

This week is going to be like being in a pressure-cooker - we have intense rehearsals and the singing competition on Friday. Our rehearsals will be interrupted on Tuesday because of the teaching demonstrations. We'll resume practice on Wednesday.
The students have already started reading for the second round of our Reading Program with a focus on Greek/Roman Mythology. They need to read at least 50% of the required reading time on fiction or nonfiction books about Greek & Roman myths.
The book "Kensuke's Kingdom," 6Y's reader, will arrive in Taiwan on the first week of December. This book, as I've mentioned earlier, will form part of the reading materials in class as well as independent reading homework. We'll be reading more on Greek & Roman Mythology for the meantime. Once we're done with this reader, we'll be exchanging books with 6 Red class's reader "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH." This book was an award winning science fiction story. It will be a great read to follow "Kensuke's Kingdom," a historical-realistic fiction. That's it for now.
Have a great week!

A shout out to our golden boys and girls for a sterling performance on Thursday's Grade 6 Singing Competition!
You all rose to the occasion and everyone looked lovely and mysterious! I am so proud of all of you, 6 Yellow!
Everybody's efforts have paid off! Starting with the girls and boys that worked hard on the choreography, Winnie's hot fire artistry on the class shirt, the girls printing and ironing of the designs on to the shirts, the boys that constructed the scythes and remade the trident, Peter's creative work on the demon horns and fingers, some students who worked on the banners, Melissa's design on the demon masks and help from some girls on putting the masks together, the students who worked hard to learn the moves and to the amazing musical talents of Jessica and Lorenz who arranged our accompanying music to fit the vocal range of our class - all of these and more, contributed to a super-duper performance on Thursday. What a feat!
A very special thank you to the parents who came and supported our class. The moms who helped with the make-up - you rock!
It was because of your help that we were able to finish right on time, and still had the chance to practice our song!
BTW (By the way), pictures and videos of our presentation may not be uploaded to FB, YouTube or any other social media until after the regional singing contest is done. Thank you, once more, for your understanding and cooperation.
AND NOW - back to reality.
Our students are going to have their midterm exams on Thursday, October 29. Please encourage and monitor them to review for the tests.
In spite of the missed classes due to the singing contest rehearsals, and the upcoming midterms, our class is still holding a Halloween celebration!
Halloween Celebration on Friday, October 30 -
1. the students have been grouped into 6 teams. Each team has been assigned an area in the classroom to decorate based on their chosen theme (Ex. zombie land, the vampire corner, the witches' coven, etc.)
2.. Each team shall wear a scaled-down costume (scaled down means not full blown or full costume.) For example, the group with the theme of witches may wear a witch hats.
3. Each team will present a Halloween recipe - a simple recipe that involves putting together food parts that look like a Halloween figure or symbol. .
Again, please review for the midterm exams. They're still our priority.
Good luck,
Ms. Chen

The Singing competition Craze is on!Wow - Last week was the second long weekend we've had this semester - and it's only the 7th week! I hope that the extra time we've had for our family and ourselves had given everyone the much needed energy boost to prepare for the much awaited annual singing competition. This week, the Yu Tsai community will be buzzing with activity as every class scrambles to practice and get ready to show off their talents and creativity on stage. For our 6 Yellow tweeners, here are a few reminders to give us some awesome points during the contest: 1. SING and feel what you're singing Performers who can deliver the emotion of the song will captivate and hold the attention of the audience. DO NOT BE A ZOMBIE! DO NOT BE A ROBOT! Open your mouth freely and pronounce the words correctly. When you sing, forming all the words with your mouth well, you not only look like you feel the song, but also your voice would project louder than when you're singing with your mouth hardly moving. 2. FORGET WHO YOU ARE - and be a performer! Stop thinking what people will think of you. If you give them a really good performance, they'll only have good things to say about you! When on stage, you are not the "ordinary you" - you are the "extraordinary you" and you're there to entertain. 3. This may be the last time you'll perform in elementary on stage, so GIVE IT YOUR BEST! The only way the audience would enjoy themselves is when you perform to the best of your ability. I know that it's easy to say "Don't be shy" or "don't be scared" because normal human beings do feel these things. But now that you know that, you can pretend not to be "shy" or "scared." As one sports ads always says - JUST DO IT! 4. The most important thing of all when performing on stage (and I know that if you found number 3 above hard, then this would be even harder, you would say!) is to enjoy yourself and have fun. There's nothing that an audience loves the most than a performer who is enjoying him/herself. The people watching you feel happy, too! Imagine watching someone who looks very unhappy and seemingly in pain, or one who looks like he/she would rather be home. The ones watching would also feel uncomfortable and wished you didn't have to perform and suffer. 5. Of course, you wouldn't be able to successfully do all four above if you are not prepared to perform. You must practice and know your song and choreography really well. Practice, practice, practice!. Practice in front of the mirror until you can sing and imagine all your moves and actually do them all well. I hope that you'll all remember the above pointers. GOOD LUCK, golden boys and girls! |
